How to Learn New Hairstyles
For you or your little girl's hair!
First, figure out what hairstyles you like and don’t like. Use the Internet as a resource. Browse fashion and style blogs. A great way to keep track of the styles you like is to sign up for a Pinterest account, or something similar like a Tumblr blog. These types of websites allow you to visually archive your favorite photos, videos, or links into an organized way.
Next, choose a hairstyle you would like to try to learn. Start simple. (For example, you’ll want to learn a basic braid before you try a more challenging braid like a french braid or fishtail braid.)
Search for online hair tutorials. A personal favorite hair tutorial website is The Beauty Department where you can find step by step hairstyle instructions as well as photographs to go along with the process. Browsing other people’s Pinterest boards is another great way to find hairstyles and tips or tricks.
Practice on a friend or sibling. This will help you get the techniques down. It is usually more difficult to style your own hair as you are limited in your reach and what angles you can see. Practicing on another person will help you get used to what techniques work best.
Once you think you’ve got the hang of the hairstyle, give it a try on yourself. Again, as with all things, mastering a hairstyle takes practice. Learning new hairstyles should be fun, so try not to stress out too much if it’s not perfect the first (or second) time.
Consider taking a few photos of yourself with your new hairstyle. Try and get photos of various angles such as front, back, and each side. A hairstyle is much more than just what you can see in the mirror. Reviewing the photographs will help you decide if you like this new look. The photographs will also serve as a great way to remember which styles you’ve tried as well as provide inspiration for new styles.
Don’t be afraid to try new things or different variations of a style. Use the inspiration you find and create your own style! Afterall, all of the styles you will find are the result of someone trying something new, or perhaps “messing up” and creating their own style. Most of all, remember to have fun!
